NHS Lothian Starting to Recruit for HEAL-COVID

This new trial aiming to impact on long-term effects of COVID-19 has begun recruiting at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Western General Hospital, and St Johns Hospital.

NHS Lothian has been accepted into the HEAL–COVID trial, and we now have the green light to start recruiting patients.

HEAL–COVID is a clinical trial to compare different treatments to determine whether they can improve the longer-term outcomes for patients who have been hospitalised due to COVID-19. Patients will be asked if they would like to take part shortly before they are discharged home.
Like the RECOVERY trial, HEAL–COVID has an adaptive platform trial design, which means a variety of potential treatments might enter the trial in time.
The first three arms will include:
  1. Apixaban for 2 weeks or
  2. Atorvastatin for 12 months or
  3. Usual standard care

In addition, the HEAL–COVID study has been included in the NIHR Associate PI scheme:

The Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme aims to develop junior doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to become the PIs of the future and provides formal recognition of a trainee’s engagement in NIHR Portfolio research studies through the conferment of Associate PI status endorsed by the NIHR and several medical Royal Colleges.
